Interior Drainage Systems Installation
Having a basement gives your home a whole new dimension. You can use it for storage, make it a living space, organize a hobby room, or a million other things. The main challenge is keeping it dry and safe from water. In Northern Michigan, heavy rainfall, melting snow, and shifting soil create constant pressure around your foundation, easily forcing water into your basement.
If you’re struggling with standing water, musty odors, or recurring leaks in your basement, you can trust our professionals to fix it ASAP. At Story Basements, we install interior drainage systems designed to keep your basement dry year-round.

What Is an Interior Drainage System?
An interior drainage system is a basement waterproofing solution. This tile system is installed along the perimeter of your basement floor. It collects water as it enters and directs it safely away from your home using a sump pump system. Unlike exterior waterproofing, this solution works from inside your basement, making it more reliable, less invasive, and effective in all seasons. They are also known as a French drain or drain tile system.
How Do Interior Drainage Systems Work?
- Water enters your basement: Hydrostatic pressure from saturated soil pushes water through cracks, porous concrete, or the wall-floor joint.
- The drain captures the water: A perimeter trench and perforated pipe collect water before it spreads across your basement floor.
- The drain moves the water to a sump basin: The system is sloped to naturally direct water toward a sump pit basin.
- A sump pump drains the water: Once the basin fills, the sump pump automatically discharges water away from your foundation.
Signs that Your Basement is Suffering From Water Intrusion
Look for these common signs to find out if you need interior drainage solutions:
- Water pooling on the basement floor
- Damp walls or persistent moisture
- Musty odors or poor air quality
- Visible mold or mildew growth
- White, chalky residue (efflorescence) on walls
- Cracks in walls or along the floor joint
If you notice any of these, it’s a strong indication your home’s foundation levels need a basement waterproofing solution.
Benefits of Installing Interior French Drains
Keep Your Basement Dry Year-Round
Capture and redirect water before it can flood your basement, even during heavy rain or spring snowmelt.
Protect Your Foundation from Damage
Channeling the water away from your basement relieves pressure around your foundation to prevent cracks, leaks, and structural issues over time.
Improve Air Quality & Prevent Mold
A dry basement reduces humidity, helping eliminate musty odors, allergens, and mold growth, keeping your family health safe.
Cost-Effective & Minimally Invasive
No exterior excavation required. Installation is faster, cleaner, and can be completed year-round, even in winter, as work doesn't depend on outside temperatures.
Long-Lasting, Low-Maintenance Solution
Built with durable materials, interior drainage systems can last decades with minimal upkeep.
How Story Basements Installs Interior Drainage Systems
Here's how we install interior drainage systems:
- Inspecting the area: Each basement has different moisture entry points and optimal drainage routes. We'll determine and design the most effective drainage layout for yours.
- Preparing the area: We carefully move and protect items in the work area to ensure a clean and efficient installation.
- Cutting the trench: We then dig the trench in a way that diverts water naturally toward the sump pit location, usually with a slight slope.
- Installing the components: We install the perforated pipe, sump basin, and sump pump system with optional battery backup.
- Restoring the area: After connecting the sump pump's discharge line, we'll add gravel around the drain pipe and pour concrete over the trench to protect the drainage system and restore the basement's floor.
- Testing the system: Once work is done, we'll thoroughly test the system, to make sure it activates at the right time to effectively direct excess water from your basement toward the sump through the French drain.
